Spooky Films for Your Fancy

It's the last full week of October which means it's time to cram in as many halloween classics as you can before the spooky season is over. This is one of my favorite times of year for films so I'd love to throw some recommendations your way to get you in the mood for Halloween.

1. Hocus Pocus

This movie remains to be a Halloween classic and it's friendly for the entire family! It's not a particularly scary movie, but it still has the witches, zombies and ghouls to give you that trick-or-treat feel. Over 20 years after it's release, I still count down the days every year until I can rewatch this.

2. Halloweentown Series

Another Disney Channel Original Movie, Halloweentown centers on a girl named Marnie who learns she's from a family of witches and there's an entire separate dimension where witches and warlocks reside. Follow her journey of self-discovery (all four movies) and have a fun time chomping down on some candy corn while ignoring her recast in the last movie.

3. Nightmare on Elm Street

Okay, this movie is not for the weak-hearted and it's certainly not safe for everyone to watch, but hey, if you feel like you can handle it, give it your best shot! This movie is a horror classic which even prompted a remake a little under 30 years later in 2010. This movie will really give you chills.

4. Halloween

I'd feel remiss if I didn't include the movie that literally hails it's name from the scary holiday, so Halloween (1978) makes the list. This movie actually was a pioneer in slasher films, turning horror from more than just psychological to a more gory and thrill-filled adventure. We can thank this movie for the endless slasher films we have now, but take a look at this original if you want to see where it all started.

5. Stranger Things

Okay, so it's not a movie, but how could I skip over this gem? Plus, the long-awaited season 2 premieres this Friday on Netflix so if there's anytime to binge, it's now. The way I've always put it is Stranger Things takes all the things that make you feel the 80s horror nostalgia (arguable the best era of horror) but still manages to feel new not copied. You still haven't watched Stranger Things? Believe me, it's lives up to the hype. Don't forget to grab a box of Eggo's when you watch!

So light a candle, pop some popcorn, grab and cozy drink and turn on one of these classics. Or if you have any other recommendations or season favorites, throw me a comment below!
