Hi-Lo Diner: An Athenian's Local Watering Hole

These past two weeks have been hell week for me, or for a lot of other UGA students as well as the midterms began to pile up. With that in mind, I needed a place to study for the whole day and night, but I didn't want to pick up and leave to go get food, so I thought, "Where can I go to eat and study?" I'm sure I could have stayed at home, but I'm too tempted to fall asleep in my bed or put on Netflix to get anything done at home. I suppose I could have gone to campus and studied at the MLC or the main library, but parking on campus during day hours is either a hassle or expensive - at least to a college student.

Then it occurred to me: I haven't been to Hi-Lo in a while. Hi-Lo is a cute pub and diner in Normaltown by Aqualinda and Normal Bar. They have tons of artisan drinks, plenty of beer on tap, and a wicked menu that ranges from fish and chips to a vegan po' boy.

Not to mention, they have WiFi and a crazy good Sunday brunch which we all know is a quintessential ritual for us Athenians. It's definitely a townie joint, with rustic wooden booths much like the ones at Walker's and a small raised platform for live music when the occasion calls for it.

The reason I bring it up, though, is that whenever I talk about it, almost no one seems to know what I'm talking about. Once in a while, a local Prince Ave resident will know what I'm talking about, but for the most part students are clueless about the place. Maybe they need to expand their marketing or digital presence, but I've taken it upon myself to spread the word because it's seriously one of my favorite places in the Classic City. I actually get sad when I think about the fact that when I graduate, it won't be just around the corner anymore.

It's crazy affordable, with HUGE portions and a very generous pour on quite literally all of their drinks. But most of all, I just love the vibe. Everyone is always in a good mood, the white noise actually helps me focus and I can grab a bite there while I'm trying to get my work done. Give it a try! I'm absolutely sure there's something for everyone to love there.
